dishwasher
energy fact sheet
The
dishwasher, as a major appliance, is another potential
source of wasted energy in your home. The most efficient
of today's dishwashers uses only a third of the energy of
a similar model from the late 1970's. A new dishwasher
can save water and reduce your utility bill over the
expected lifetime of 11 years. Check the yellow Energy
Guide label for more information.
About
80% of the energy used by a dishwasher is used to heat
the water. The remainder is for the motor and fan. New,
quieter energy-efficient models use less than five
gallons for a cycle. This can be less water used than by
hand washing dishes. For 322 loads a year (average of 6 a
week), new ENERGY STAR® qualifying dishwashers use no
more than 624 kWh (Kilowatt-hour - a measure of
electric power consumption) per year or an EF
(Energy Factor - the number of cycles that can be
completed with one kilowatt-hour of electricity) of
.52. This is an increase of the EF from .28 in
1976.
