eliminating garbage disposer odors

Garbage disposer should be cleaned regularly to prevent build up of grease & odors. Use cold water when running the unit. Let the water run after disposer sounds clear to be sure the garbage moves down the drain.

NOTE: Check under sink to be sure disposer, drains & water connections are not leaking. Spots on cabinet floor indicate leaks.

CAUTION: Do not put any commercial or homemade cleaning products down the disposer! If there is an odor from the disposer, grind some citrus fruit (peeling is okay) w/ the water.

Always unplug the unit first (underneath the cabinet) before putting your hand in the disposer

Garbage Disposer Stops

If garbage disposer does not work or stops, this usually means that something is jammed in the disposer. If it is still humming:

1) Turn the disposer off.

2) Turn the cold water on.

3) If your model comes w/ a wrench, insert it in the hole in the bottom & turn it back & forth until the disposer turns easily.

4) If you can't use a wrench, take a long stick & push it into the disposer & push against one of the grinders until the disposer turns freely. CAUTION: Don't put your hand in the disposer!

5) If the unit is not humming, press the Reset Button on the bottom of disposer.

Disposer Is Noisy

This usually means that some hard object like a spoon or bone has fallen into the disposer.

1) Unplug cord or turn off circuit breaker for kitchen prior to attempting removal of any items stuck in the disposer.

2) Use a long handled tongs or pliers to reach into the disposer & remove the object.

CAUTION:

  • Do not put your hand into the disposer.
  • Do not put bones, metal or stringy material down garbage disposer.
  • Keep hard objects out. This includes plastic, rubber & metal as well as bones & gristle unless your owner's manual says you can put them down.
  • Use a strong flow of cold water when grinding waste. The cold will help harden grease so that it doesn't clog the disposer or drain line. The water flow will make sure the ground up waste passes into the sewer & doesn't clog your drain lines.
  • Leave the water running for a minute after you finish grinding.
  • Do not use chemical drain cleaners in the disposer.
