how to repair flush tank problems

possible noticeable problems

  • tank continues to run after tank fills

  • tank doesn't fill but water continues to run

  • tank partly empties

  • water leaks on the floor

  • nothing happens when you push the flush handle

  • no water pressure available


if water continues to run after tank refills
problem - water inlet valve isn't seating tight enough to shut the water off. To isolate the problem, remove the tank lid, grab the float & lift.

If water stops running, the problem may be the float mechanism. If the float is over half submerged, look for a leak in the float. Check the float & repair or replace. If it's ok, adjust the float downward by:

12" slip joint pliers (channel lock)

teflon paste/thread compound

Check the name brand of the toilet & age (inside the tank lid). Copy all numbers written in the tank & the lid to check if replacement parts are available prior to starting any repairs

  • adjustment screw on top of the ball cock

  • do not bend the rod supporting the float it may break, the water level in the tank should be about 1" below the overflow pipe. If you can't stop the water flow by raising the float, the problem is in the ball cock or water filling valve
